Pollutant emissions increased record high

In 2013, atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions increased at the highest level in nearly 30 years, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

>>>Greenhouse gas emissions hit new records

In the September 9 announcement, WMO said the increase - the highest since 1984, was the main reason why the overall greenhouse gas concentration "climbed" to a new record.

According to WMO's record, in 2013, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentrations were 142% higher than in the mid-18th century, before the industrial revolution took place. The concentration of methane also increased by 153% and nitric oxide (NO) increased by 21%.

"We must reverse this trend by cutting CO 2 emissions and other greenhouse gases on a large scale," WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said. "We don't have much time , " he added.

According to WMO, burning coal and oil as well as energy-intensive cement production has pushed up CO2. There are also other factors such as burning of agricultural waste .

CO2 is one of the main emissions causing global warming. Although most of the CO 2 goes into the atmosphere, some of it is also retained in the oceans, causing water to acidify, negatively impacting corals, algae and other marine organisms.
