Portugal issues biometric passports
On August 28, Portugal began using biometric passports, with the first being delivered to President Anibal Cavaco Silva at a ceremony Monday in the city of Lisbon.
President Silva said the new passport, made according to European standards, is a significant contributor to security, as it contains a microchip that carries personal data, digital photos, and fingerprints. hand.
The passport costs 60 euros, double the price of the old passports (will still be used until the expiry date).
EU Member States have until the end of August to issue biometric passports, as a means of combating terrorism following the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.
