As expected, Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear smartwatch (smartwatch) at the IFA 2013 Technology Fair taking place in Berlin (Germany). However, Samsung is not the only company that has just announced smartwatch. At Qualcomm's annual Uplinq developer conference held in San Diego, Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs demonstrated a smartwatch called Toq.

Although Qualcomm plans to sell Toq from mid-October 2013, in fact this watch is aimed at demonstrating technology rather than a commercial product.

"We hope to produce a few tens of thousands, not a few hundred thousand," said Qualcomm's operator Rob Chandhok in an interview . For us, success is when our partners choose and apply this technology. Qualcomm does not turn into a consumer electronics company . ' Qualcomm hopes this will be the starting point for their partners to rely on and create their own smartwatch device.

The name of this product - Toq, has a transliteration similar to the word 'talk' in English and intends to sell for about 300 USD. The device uses Qualcomm's Mirasol display - a screen technology that combines the long battery life of E-Ink style screens with colors and other features commonly found in an LCD monitor. Toq is supported by WiPower LE wireless charging technology, connected to Android phones via Bluetooth.

Toq has two different watch faces, one of which displays the time and upcoming appointments, the other displays the time and weather information. Toq can also adjust the music player on the phone, as well as display text messages and send pre-set reply messages.

Clearly Toq is designed as ' companion ' with a smartphone, the clock's settings will be adjusted via an app installed on the Android phone.

Toq users can also receive other types of Android notifications that often pop up on the phone screen. Users can choose which notifications of applications will be displayed on the watch. Qualcomm will provide a set of tools for interested companies to develop applications for Toq.

The combination of the Mirasol display and other energy-saving features allows Toq to always turn on (without the on / off button) and has enough battery life for several days after each full charge.

Mr. Chandhok added that, by tapping Android notifications, the clock can access useful information without the specific support from developers. Most navigation operations are done by swiping the touch screen, instead of using a combination of buttons. Toq is equipped with an accelerometer sensor and a microphone (but no speakers) and at least one version is equipped with a Bluetooth headset. This headset can also be wirelessly charged.

Mr. Chandbok said Qualcomm will sell Toq online and perhaps only a small number of products will be displayed at retail stores.
