Quang Nam underground exploded like a bomb

On the night of November 27, a loud explosion came from a large underground ground like the sound of bombs downstream of Tranh Tranh 2 hydropower project (Bac Tra My, Quang Nam) causing aftershocks within a radius of 30km.

People in Tra My town and communes of Tra Bui, Tra Giac, Tra Tan, Tra Doc, Tra Giang, Tra Son and Tra Duong were once again in a state of panic because of loud explosions like bombs that shook the ground.

Mr. Ho Van Nam in Tra Son commune described: "The explosion wanted to be deaf at the ear. The ground shook for about 2 minutes, the main door and window banged like a whirlwind. My whole house went under the bed of the house room. collapsing, falling tile roofs ".

Prof. Dr. Cao Dinh Trieu, expert of Geophysics Institute, said that seismic station in Thua Thien - Hue recorded earthquake aftershocks in Bac Tra My district on 21h23 night on November 27 but not determined how many degrees richter."We have sent a written request to the Vietnam Association of Geosciences Science and Technology to send a delegation to set up an observation and research station in this locality but have not yet seen a response , " said Trieu.

From November 16 until now, there have been 3 times when there have been many explosions emanating from the ground in the middle of the night until dawn, in which the night of the night of November 27 is the biggest. Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Bac Tra My District People's Committee said that during the past two weeks, the people in the district lost their food, insomnia, and business disturbance because of fear of earthquakes.

Mr. Tuan confirmed the explosive sound last night shaking the ground within a radius of 30km in the downstream and upstream of Tranh Tranh 2 hydropower project.

At present, the authorities of Bac Tra My district are worried about thousands of ethnic minority people living in the resettlement areas of Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant, fearing that the earthquakes left their homes to migrate to the protection forests."According to the local custom, if the place is unsafe, the life is not stable, they will migrate to another area. The implication is to destroy natural forests in the watershed," Tuan said.

Quang Nam province has asked the Ministry of Science and Technology to soon study, to find out the cause of the explosion in the ground. Experts from the General Geological Society of Vietnam put forward the hypothesis that loud explosions in the ground downstream of Song Tranh 2 dam might be caused by volcanic lava entering the cave, hollow pillars filled with water in the ground.

As for Prof. Cao Dinh Trieu, he affirmed that the aftershock in the North Tra My downstream area has been below 3.5 Richter lately, under the form of stimulating earthquake. This fault zone in this locality may be active.
