Lead pollution is a very serious problem, especially when thousands of old automotive batteries are unused due to the advances in today's battery technology. A battery from an old car that can be recycled into cheap solar panels can power 30 average households. To do this, the researchers extracted lead from the battery and used it to produce a solar cell using perovskite , a compound that was 19 percent more efficient than conventional materials.

According to MIT researchers, each solar cell needs a super-thin perovskite sheet of about 1/2 micron. A car battery provides enough power for many homes, and it can also continue to be recycled.

Solar panels are made from old automotive batteries and then re-used to make new solar cells, avoiding environmental pollution. In addition, the process is simpler and cheaper than producing conventional silicon solar panels.
