Although the distribution area of this lawn is not large, it contributes to the richness of seagrass species in Vietnam.

This is also the basis for explaining why sea cows (Dugong) often appear in this waters.

According to scientists, in the coastal area of Kien Giang there are up to 10 species of seagrass and attract many precious and rare marine animals here.

Local people said that in the past 3 years, in the waters of the Pirate Islands, there have been about 10 Dugong herds.

Previously, according to a study by Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Van Tien, Institute of Oceanography in Hai Phong, general statistics of the country, now the area of Vietnam's seagrass is reduced by 40-60%.

Currently, according to incomplete statistics, up to now, the area of seagrass distribution in Vietnam is about 10,000 ha.

In our country, seagrass usually grows in tidal areas along the coast, on the islands, in estuaries, in mangrove forests, in lagoons, in lagoons and in bays.

Seagrasses grow almost all year round, but it is best in the spring, early summer and poor growth in the rainy season. They are distributed from tidal areas to a depth of 3-15m and even 28m (Bach Long Vi island). They are adapted to salinity of 0.5-3.4%, substrate is small mud, mud, coral sand, coarse sand or gravel.

Seagrass beds can stabilize and protect the substrate with roots, cows and fallen leaves on the ground. They work to prevent or minimize erosion or damage the coast.

The role of seagrass involved in world marine and oceanic nutrient cycles is estimated at 3.8 trillion (trillion) USD and the economic value of 1 ha of seagrass area is up to 212,000 USD / year.

In Vietnam, the initial research results show that the economic value includes the exploitation value (seagrass and associated species) and not exploiting (environmental ecology) of relatively high seagrass (bay Cam Ranh: US $ 7,920,000, Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon: US $ 1,628,000, and Bui Bon in Phu Quoc island: US $ 481,202).
