However, some farmers who cultivate IR50404 rice varieties are struggling to find outlets for their products, because although the selling price is quite low compared to other commercial commodity rice, traders still do not buy.

In the key rice areas such as U Minh Thuong, Vinh Thuan, Giong Rieng, Tan Hiep, Go Quao, Chau Thanh ., on the means of purchasing rice, traders affix the table '504 rice . not buying' so farmers do not sold, although the price of rice is only 4,000-4,200 VND / kg.

Meanwhile, this rice production is quite large, farmers need to sell to pay for the investment costs of production, bank loan repayments and household living expenses.

According to Kien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the 2011-2012 Winter-Spring crop, the whole province sowed 290,549 / 285,000 ha, up nearly 2% compared to the plan, but sowing IR50404 rice seeds accounted for 31% of the area.

The agricultural sector recommends that localities control the area of ​​sowing low-quality rice without exceeding 20%, but in many places farmers "break the fence" , especially Chau Thanh district, IR50404 rice seed sown 70% more than total seeding area.

The reason is that the previous crops, this type of rice sold at a price thanks to the favorable low-grade rice export market, the IR 50404 rice variety has always yielded 6-8 tons / ha, so many farmers still prefer this variety. for planting.

According to many traders, the reason for not buying IR50404 rice because it is a low quality agricultural product, has not signed a new contract to export this type of rice to the partner; The rice export market in the first months of this year faced many difficulties and competition was fierce, because of the emerging low-grade rice markets; rice prices are low, unpredictable movements, if they buy into huge risks, inevitable losses.

Meanwhile, high quality rice products, fragrant rice demand for consumption in the market are increasing in the direction of benefits and many ordering partners, so enterprises focus on purchasing processing for export .

Implementing the Government's policy of buying temporary storage of 1 million tons of rice, Kien Giang province directs the functional industry to coordinate with key enterprises to organize reasonable purchasing, reduce intermediaries, to increase direct profits. for farmers.

In order to avoid the 'devaluation' in the coming seasons, the provincial agricultural sector continues to advocate and encourage farmers to limit IR50404 rice cultivation to less than 20% of the area, to guide and support and create conditions for people to switch seeds, switch to growing high quality rice, fragrant rice is of economic value, meeting export standards.

Kien Giang province plans to re-plan rice production and export rice on the basis of focusing on developing high quality seed sources, restructuring production to improve brand and rice grain value.
