Spring is the season of blooming flowers, but just before Christmas, thousands of extremely rare 'ice flowers' have blooming on the lake at a Russian national park.

But this kind of flower has an extremely short life span. The RT said thousands of ice crystal flowers hatched on Lake Valdai in Novgorod province in northwestern Russia on December 18.

Director of Valdai National Park, Nikolai Sokolov, said the 'ice flower' phenomenon occurs when the temperature suddenly drops . Mr. Sokolov said: 'Only yesterday, the temperature at Valdai dropped below 0 degrees Celsius but today the thermometer is only at -20 degrees Celsius'.

Mr. Sokolov also affirmed that in 24 years of working at Valdai, this is the first time he has witnessed such a beautiful and fascinating scene.

The condition for this rare phenomenon to occur is that the lake water is still warm enough and suddenly a cold air forms into the ice on the surface. When water fluctuates on the ice and freezes, it looks like flowers. This phenomenon is very short and quickly disappears when the temperature rises or snow falls.
