UK researchers have successfully developed an automatic model car, which could pave the way for the creation of a smart driverless vehicle.
This autonomous model was built by a team of Computer Science department researchers at Essex University, led by researcher Simon Lucas. The car will be tested on the track at Colchester this summer.
The new car has a remote control model, fitted with a car PC and a video recorder and other sensors. Researchers say the software written for this computer will allow the vehicle to be fully automated, able to identify obstacles and make decisions to avoid that obstacle.
'This is the first time a fully automated vehicle has been built. By using these model cars, we hope to be able to find technology to help make smart cars cheaper, ' Lucas said.
According to researchers, unmanned vehicles can be widely used in cities around the world over the next 15 years instead of taxis or delivery vehicles .
