Speed up access, website must pay for ISP

Jupiter Research predicts that Internet service providers (ISPs) may consider forcing websites to pay if they want to speed up access to the site.

If this becomes reality it will turn the Internet into a ' double layer network '. The service provider benefits directly from both sides - customers and developers manage the website.

However, this 'double-sided' business solution can make Internet service customers turn to ISPs. 'But this is a really attractive solution for ISPs,' said Jupiter Research analyst Ian Fogg.

But besides, Mr. Fogg recommends that this business solution will add to the complexity of the broadband service system, which is already confused.

Tools available

To be able to market low-cost broadband services like now ISPs have to trade off with revenue. The profit margin from such services is currently very low.

' Currently, broadband access service does not bring much profit for ISPs, their source of revenue comes from other services or not, it will take to charge website fee in exchange for better access speed. . Standing in the middle of charging at both ends - customers and website developers - is really a very attractive solution , 'Fogg said.

Mr. Fogg also added that to deploy a website charging system is completely within reach of ISPs. They just need to deploy more information flow management tools that can control the bandwidth of websites on the server.

' ISPs say they have used these tools to control reputable peer-to-peer applications that consume a lot of bandwidth. This means they can fully deploy this tool for other services. The only problem here is whether they are really attracted to risk this business solution or not . '

Some ISPs also give a lot of priority to their value-added services such as IPTV or VoIP Internet TV services. ISP customers will see the speed of accessing these services much faster than other 3rd party services.

In Vietnam, this type of access has also appeared. There have been ISPs offering websites that offer services exclusively for their broadband Internet users.

' Whether or not to apply a website-based business solution to exchange for better access than ISPs needs to clarify their policies with customers. Customers need to know if they have access to all services or just a few. They are entitled to decide which services to use . '

A recent study by Jupiter Research found that 16% of users want to be guaranteed by ISPs that they are not prevented from accessing any other third-party website. 29% of users want to pay for guaranteed unrestricted access.

Mr. Fogg said that the best ISPs now offer broadband Internet access without limitation.
