Strange island researcher off the coast of Mexico

According to the AFP, 20 artists and scientists from eight countries on Tuesday went to the Clipperton Island, an island outside the Pacific, not far from the coast of Mexico, to investigate the impact. of climate change and the history of the island.

Named after the British pirate John Clipperton, the island "Emotional Island" is 6 km 2 in size, has no clean water and is home to many reptiles and poisonous snakes.

"The Clipperton project aims to study climate change, using Clipperton Island as a lens so people can see the bigger problem," said Jonathan Bonfliglio, British project leader in Mexico City.

Participants will perform art works and conduct scientific research. The group will travel from Mexico's La Paz port on 3 sailboats to the island and will return on March 30.

Clipperton has been under the sovereignty controversy of many countries for the past 200 years, mainly between France and Mexico.

About 100 Mexicans have lived here since the beginning of the 20th century, receiving relief supplies from the continent. However, the residents came down gradually when the Mexican Revolution broke out in 1910, causing disease and widespread famine. An American ship saved the last survivor here in 1917.

France claimed sovereignty over the island in 1931 and Mexico also tried to retrieve it from there.
