Sudden hearing loss: Signs of stroke

Stroke, the journal of the American Heart Association recently said: The study was initially selected from the national health insurance record repository in Taiwan that sudden hearing loss has can be an early sign of stroke.

Follow-up data on 1,423 patients hospitalized for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) for 5 years showed that these people were 1.5 times more likely to have a stroke than a group another 5,692 patients went to the hospital to remove the appendix.

The person leading the investigation, Dr. Herng-Ching Lin, a lecturer at the Taiwan Medical University for Health Care Management, said the findings are only the initial exploration information, since the information in insurance records is sometimes inaccurate. .

Mr. Lin also said: 'According to all we know, there has been no investigation on the incidence or risk of cerebrovascular diseases because of the sudden occurrence of hearing loss due to sensory nerves.

However, this is the first time we have made these connections, and also because there are so many limitations in the data warehouse, the results need to be interpreted with caution, carefully, until when there are further independent studies on this finding ".

The above findings are limited because there is no clear concept or definition of SSNHL evidence in the database.

"In addition, the database does not have information about the dangers of hearing loss, hearing recovery, stroke risk factors such as tobacco use, only number of body weight BMI, history of cardiovascular disease and atrial fibrillation " - Mr. Lin explained.

However, researchers also believe that all patients with SSNHL need to undergo a thorough neurological examination and blood test to determine where the stroke risk originates. From there, it is possible to confirm the level of success of the study.
