'Super beans' helps solve hunger in the world

With good pest resistance and high productivity, "super beans" are expected to address hunger for many parts of Africa.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has signed an agreement with a major producer to supply 21 tons of "super beans" to South Sudanese refugees for cultivation.

Relief workers hope NABE15 will encourage refugees to grow their own food instead of relying on sources of relief that could be cut if the fund is in short supply.

Beatrice Okello, FAO senior program manager in Uganda, said that with only 50kg NABE15, growers will harvest 2 tons of beans.

Mr. Robin Buruchara, Director of the African Bean Research Alliance, said the "super beans" above are highly appreciated because they are quicker, sweeter and pest resistant than other types of regular beans.

Agricultural experts are looking for ways to use genetic tools in hopes of creating even better nuts than NABE15 beans, such as rapid growth, good drought and pest resistance, rich in nutrients .

After the success in Uganda, NABE15 beans are increasingly popular in South Sudan - the area is seriously threatened by hunger.
