The tomb discovered by archaeologist Hector Escobedo at the end of last week, containing the remains of the king of the city of El Peru Waka, is now in ruins. This king may be the founder of the city, located on the main Mayan trade route linking Tikal city in Guatemala to Mexico.

" If this is indeed the founder, that is really a discovery of the times, " said David Freidel at Southern Methodist University in Texas.

The excavation team is working urgently due to the perception that grave robbers are also digging the area. Just a day before Escobedo discovered the grave, bandits also sneaked into a tunnel excavated by archaeologists under the pyramid, but they failed to find the spoils.

El Peru Waka was discovered in the 1960s, but Escobedo and the team began conducting excavations three years ago.

On May 3, another archaeological group also found the second royal tomb in a pyramid above the hill. This tomb may be born more than 400 years late. Based on a sophisticated drawing of noble women, dwarves, players and gods sitting late in the pyramid, archaeologists believe the area may contain many royal remains. other.

The Mayans dominated southeast Mexico and most of Central America for thousands of years until Spain invaded about 500 years ago. Their descendants still live in the area to this day.
