The ancient 'Titanic' secret gradually revealed

According to archaeologists, this excavation may prove there are at least seven bronze statues buried in the seabed in this area.

Ocean archaeologists in the "Return to Antikythera" project have just revealed interesting information about the latest excavation of the "ancient Titanic" ship sunk 2,000 years ago.

According to archaeologists, this excavation may prove there are at least seven bronze statues buried in the seabed in this area.

These are extremely rare "treasures" , as ancient statues are often made to make swords for wars and only about 50 relatively complete statues can "survive".

Over the past century, this ship has brought a lot of value to archeology: from the parts of bronze statues, marble statues of gods or heroes to the traces of Antikythera Mechanism - The name given by scientists to the world's oldest dating computer.

In the past year, the team has also discovered traces of part of the human skeleton, which can then be analyzed for DNA.

Many priceless antiques

When divers found the ship for the first time in the 1900s, they discovered six right-hand copper arms. However, it takes a lot of time and new technology to find the 7th arm recently.

The arms are blue-brown, long from the shoulder to the tip of the finger, still able to see some carvings.

"Although it lost two fingers, this is still a great discovery. This must be part of the statue, not a single part. And the waiting statue we find", Alexander Sotirious, one of the Project diver, said.

In recent dives, the group also spotted a small bronze disc with four four-pronged four-pronged buttons, which had a hole in it, which was supposed to protect something.

Bredan Foley, an archaeologist at Lund University in Sweden, believes that this is probably the missing part of Antikythera Mechanism. They sent it all to the research lab in Athens for X-rays and found it beneath the dark blue layer, a picture of a . cow.

Now they begin to do more experiments to determine what this object is: a part of the Antikythera Mechanism or just a decorative part of a ship or some ancient vase.

Titanic of ancient times

"This ship with many treasures may be a super-luxury ship of the time used to carry rice and art works to trade in the Mediterranean , " Professor Foley said.

Researchers believe it could also give us a better understanding of ancient noble life as well as operating at the beginning of maritime exchanges around the world.

Scientists believe that this super-large ship - like the Titanic, encountered a big storm before it sank. In the process of sinking, it may have been overturned many times, causing objects in the compartment to be thrown everywhere. Over 2 millennia, earthquakes and landslides buried many of them.

For decades, it was thought that this ship was of the ancient Roman Empire, as documented by Jacques Cousteau - the French oceanographer. However, the team's findings since 2012 suggest that it originated in northern Greece when it found the Greek name engraved on it.

In recent dives, the team has discovered broken wood and some parts of the vessel, promising to be able to trace its origin.

They plan to transfer pieces of wood to researchers in Tel Aviv, Israel to determine which plants were used to build ships. In addition, the next dive in 2018 will definitely reveal more interesting information, according to Dr. Foley.
