Scientists at National Geographic have filmed the sight of a bag in the Central American region running on water like land.
The video - shot with a high resolution camera at a rate of 2,000 frames per second - shows a striped bagger (Basiliscus vittatus) running across a small lake in Belize when he sees a snake.
A striped bag (also called a brown bag) is a crested lizard on the head, back and along the tail. With the ability to run on hind legs, they live along the banks of rivers flowing through the rainforest. The main food of plaid bags is small insects in the leaf layers. They are distributed in Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, northwestern Colombia and the United States. Take a striped bag to sunbathe every day and that habit makes them easy to become prey for predators like snakes, wild cats or birds. So in evolution they have developed the ability to run on water.
Thanks to the high-speed camera, the experts discovered how to carry a "scapegoat" on the water.
According to scientists, the back legs of a striped bag are quite wide and have a membrane between the fingers. So when running on the surface of the lake, the pressure of the foot is always smaller than the surface tension of the water so they don't sink.
"Thanks to the membrane on the legs, the bag can create a bubble every time their feet kick quickly over the water. Then they lift their feet before the bubble shatters. They can only run at that speed, because if they run "They will not be able to maintain upright posture, then they will go to the water and swim," explains Simon Blakeney, a producer at BBC Wildlife.
Previously scientists have demonstrated that bag ginseng is capable of creating tremendous lateral force while running. Thanks to that, their bodies maintained their upright posture.
