The cause of frozen water does not kill goldfish

Goldfish know how to make themselves fall into a state of "drunk" before the water freezes.

Scientists were amazed to discover that goldfish can survive in ice in natural conditions.

The results of laboratory studies show that goldfish produce lactic acid by working hard when the water temperature drops. This compound is then converted into alcohol.

Goldfish have the ability to survive in ice water.

The alcohol then caused the goldfish to fall into a drunken state, enabling them to survive the lack of oxygen in the harsh winter.

Dr Michael Berenbrink, a biologist at Liverpool University in the UK, said: 'They can tolerate a large amount of alcohol. That's amazing. '

Lactic acid compounds are produced when muscles use carbohydrates to produce energy, but only goldfish and carp are able to convert this compound into alcohol.

Goldfish freeze during the experiment without health problems and can still reproduce normally. Scientists also conducted research on white carp.

Dr Elisabeth Fagernes, head of research at Oslo University, said: ' Ethanol allows carp to be the only fish that can survive in harsh environments.'
