The fear of learning mathematics: Why do 42 million people suffer?

Mathematics is known as a subject of thinking, logic. However, many people are afraid of studying mathematics because they think it is dry and abstract. Is that the reason?

Mathematics is known as a subject of thinking, logic. However, many people are afraid of studying mathematics because they think it is dry and abstract. Is that the reason?

But besides that difficulty, a syndrome made some people more difficult than normal people.

Similar to dyslexic syndrome, Dyscalculia is a syndrome that makes it difficult to calculate and receive, comprehend the concepts and definitions of Mathematics. More precisely, Arithmetic, Algebra.

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability related to learning or congenital difficulty in understanding simple mathematical concepts.

It is like dyslexia and difficulty in numbers including: Understanding, learning how to manipulate numbers, learning math facts, and some other related symptoms.

"Math handicap" can also occur as a result of certain types of brain injury, in case the appropriate term is acalculia , to distinguish it dyscalculia which is native, genetic or developmental.

Children with this syndrome are often very afraid of Mathematics.

Although mathematical difficulties occur in low IQ children, dyscalculia can also be found in normal people with superior intelligence. Estimates of the rate of dyscalculia range from 3% to 6% of the population.

Accordingly, 1 in 5 people must struggle with basic arithmetic. Meanwhile, 1 in 15 of us have dyslexia (dyscalculia).

Some of the symptoms of Dyscalculia:

People with diseases have problems in left-brain thinking.

People with this disease often think better right brain (related to art) because the left brain (Related logic) has many obstacles.

1. The confusion between multiplication, addition, subtraction and division signs. Difficulty in performing mental math calculations as mental math.

Negative experiences make the disease worse.

Difficulties in placing numbers in appropriate columns can also be due to spatial thinking. Difficulty in reading time from the clock.

2. Difficulties in counting objects in the group (eg how many candies are in the box). Or take a lot of time to count and still be confused.

Often confused numbers.

3. Confusion between numbers like 8 and 3, 9 and 7, 6 and 9, 5 and 6 . hinders the process of learning math.

4. Difficulties in daily financial life such as estimating the price, size or length of something.

The patient will be difficult in life and study.

5. Meet difficulties in perceiving space such as direction (east, west, south, north), left and right side, realizing time.

They have difficulty in time, often late or forget the appointment . confused between the time of the incident.

6. Difficulties in remembering names and faces, or counting numbers larger than 2.

Ability to perceive limited space.

7. Difficulties in reading music notation.

8. Difficulties in counting the beat when dancing.

There are many causes of the syndrome, such as:

Short-term memory hinders learning of Math.

The weakness in image processing is the most common cause of mathematical difficulties:

  • Short-term memory: making it difficult to remember formulas, facts of Math problems, previous calculations . Difficulties in arranging information and handling them.

Difficult even in simple calculations.

  • Psychological : Fear, aversion, previous negative beliefs and experiences in underground mathematics developed into Dyscalculia.
  • Congenital and genetic , although this has not been confirmed.
  • Combine the above elements.

Mathematics is said to be an extremely important subject in life.

Thus, it is these difficulties that make people suffering from this syndrome encounter many difficulties in recognizing Mathematics.

However, special education can be used to help patients overcome this shortcoming despite the great effort required.
