Modern people outside of Africa soon learned to use marine resources.
This is the conclusion of archaeologists after determining the age of the artifacts they found in the Boodie Cave is the largest cave on Barrow Island in Western Australia. Barrow Island is a large limestone island (202km 2 ).
In the Boodie Cave, archaeologists have found animal remains, charcoal and other artifacts to show that the ancient people were here. The age of these artifacts is determined to be over 50,000 years. Among them is some of the oldest evidence of Australian Aboriginal occupation, showing that modern people outside of Africa soon learned to use marine resources.
Until now, it was believed that the first humans appeared in Australia about 40,000 years ago and the assumptions about early human settlements in Australia often caused skepticism. However, the new findings show the validity of those assumptions. As the researchers noted, Australians have lived in this cave for a long time and only left about 7,000 years ago, when the sea level rose, then Barrow Island was divided with the mainland.
