Hammetschwand - Europe's highest outdoor elevator
Hammetschwand is the name of a 153m outdoor elevator in the Burgenstock hotel near Lake Lucerne. The ladder leads to the top of the famous Swiss mountain Burgenstock. Photo: Burgenstock.
The owner of the Burgenstock Hotel built the Hammetschwand lift in 1905. At first, the workers installed a ladder from wood and covered it with sheet metal. Photo: Burgenstock.
Small and square lift can carry up to 8 passengers. Time up to the highest elevation of the elevator is three minutes. Photo: Burgenstock.
The ladder was upgraded in 1935, and the speed improved from 1 m / s to 2.7 m / s. After upgrading, Hammetschwand is not only Europe's highest outdoor public elevator but also holds the world's fastest elevator record. (Photo: Kurt Zwahlen / Flickr)
The metal tower of the building has a surface area of 2x2m, 118m high and located on a 44m high rock. Entrance to the elevator, technical room and the first 14m of the ladder lies completely inside the mountain. (Photo: Kurt Zwahlen / Flickr)
Today's elevator is made of solid but lighter metal material. The whole journey from the foot to the top of the elevator lasts only about 50 seconds. (Photo: Kurt Zwahlen / Flickr)
