The King Cobra continuously attacks, the little rabbit fights alone and the unexpected reversal

While taking photos at a wildlife sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, USA, photographer Mike Reardon accidentally witnessed an encounter between a rabbit and a copperhead snake. It seemed that the timid rabbit would easily succumb and become a meal for the predator, but unexpectedly, the hunt turned into a life-and-death battle between the two animals.

Rabbits - Animals that are often hunted

Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, found in many parts of the world. Rabbits were first known to humans around 1000 BC in Europe . The European hare is the only species of rabbit that has been domesticated. Hares are larger than domestic rabbits, have longer ears, and have black-spotted fur. They nest on the ground and do not live in groups.

The hare has large hind limbs and a well-developed musculature to serve as a defense against predators. Due to the location of the hare's eyes on its skull, it has nearly 360-degree vision, except for a blind spot at the tip of its nose. The hare's body is roughly egg-shaped. Its fur has different colors on the same strand, which serves as camouflage.

Their ears are very large because they are used to detect and guard against predators. In rabbits, the length of the ear is usually longer than the width. The rabbit ear is an important structure used for thermoregulation and detecting predators depending on how the three parts of the inner, middle, and outer ear interact with each other. The ear muscles are used to maintain balance and move while running away from predators.

Rabbits are prey animals and must be constantly aware of their surroundings. For example, in the Mediterranean region of Europe, rabbits are the main prey of red foxes, badgers and Iberian wildcats.

When faced with a potential threat, rabbits will show fear and watch, then warn others by stomping the ground. Rabbits avoid being hunted by digging underground burrows, jumping continuously in zigzags, and if caught, kicking with their hind legs. Their strong teeth allow them to eat and bite their enemies to escape.

King Cobra – The Ferocious Predator

The krait snake, also known as the krait snake or the long thua snake, the pit viper, the krait snake , is a species of snake in the family Dipterosaurs. The krait snake is a diurnal creature, living both in the trees and on the ground, non-venomous and moving quickly. They feed on a wide variety of prey and are often found in areas where rodents thrive.

The common length of the king cobra is from 1.5m to 1.95m. The record for the longest king cobra is 3.7m. The king cobra has a very interesting characteristic: they can spread their necks like a cobra and make a sound. In addition, they can also jump high or far forward to attack their prey.

According to research by ecologists, this king cobra often lives in the plains, midlands, in bushes, bamboo bushes, they often occupy mouse holes as their own den.

Although they are terrestrial reptiles, they are very good at climbing trees and swimming in water. You can see them both day and night because they feed all day long.

Unexpected turn of events

But the predator doesn't always win. In a confrontation at a wildlife sanctuary in Keenesburg, the copperhead snake was fiercely counterattacked by its rival, turning the hunt into a disaster.

The cobra, after discovering the rabbit, immediately attacked. Unfortunately, instead of running away, the rabbit stayed to confront it. Although the snake continuously launched dangerous bites, the rabbit kept jumping in circles and avoiding them. At one point, the snake bit the rabbit's ear, but thanks to persistent retaliation for 10 minutes, the rabbit finally defeated the cobra. The cobra had just missed its prey and was sorely defeated, so it had no choice but to leave.
