The lowest temperature on the Earth's surface is -98 degrees Celsius
Antarctica is the coldest region on Earth. In a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters on June 25, scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) have determined that the lowest temperature in the East Antarctic Plateau is -98 degrees C.

This is also the record low temperature that humans have ever measured on the surface of the Earth. At the same place, the US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the US Geological Survey (USGS) have recorded temperatures of -93 degrees Celsius in 2013.
The East Antarctic Plateau is a large area, roughly the size of Australia, located at an altitude of 3,500 m above sea level. The air in the plateau is very dry and windless."The dry air makes the heat from the ice surface easier to spread into space, so the surface temperature here is quite low ," said Ted Scambos, the study's lead author.
