On May 27, Guinness announced a new record for eating 3 Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest chili in the world. Accordingly, Mr. Foster beat the previous record holder of 9.72 seconds made by Mr. Mike Jack (Canada).
Carolina Reaper chili peppers have an average of 1,641,183 Scoville hot units (SHU), compared to the jalapeno pepper average of 2,500-8,000 SHU.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) once published a research report on the case of a 34-year-old man who suffered a 'lightning-like' headache after eating a Carolina Reaper chili at the 2016 US competition. This requires immediate hospitalization. A CT scan showed that the person's blood vessels in his brain were narrowed at the time he ate the chili.
In the case of Mr. Foster, the California man took on his challenge at the Seaport Mall in San Diego on December 11, 2021. In the end, he ate up to 6 chili peppers to be recognized as a new record, after the first attempt was not recorded. After the confirmation period, Guinness recognized Mr. Foster's new record on May 27.
To prepare for the effort, Mr. Gregory said he ate 'a ton of hot sauce and many other super hot chili peppers'.
