The mysterious cave only freezes in the hot summer

A strange ice ripple in Pennsylvania, USA, seems to go against the natural law of always freezing in the summer and melting in the winter.

Ice cave Coudersport Ice Mine in the town of Sweden, Pennsylvania, is one of the mysteries that challenges geologists, according to Amusing Planet. This is a small pit-shaped cave with a mouth of 2.4m wide and 3m wide. At the bottom of the cave is a 12m deep ice. Large ice pillars 7.6m long and 0.9m thick hanging on the walls of the cave and just below the cave mouth.

Unlike the normal ice cave that only formed in winter, Coudersport Ice Mine was born at the hottest time of the year. The ice begins to form from spring and gradually increases in size as the weather becomes increasingly hotter. When winter comes, the ice in the cave immediately melts into water.

Researchers have not found the cause of the strange ice formation in Coudersport Ice Mine. According to the most popular hypothesis, during the winter, cold air enters the center of the mountain through cracks. Due to unusual cracks, the cold air is concentrated in the same Coudersport Ice Mine. Cold air comes into contact with groundwater creating ice. This process only takes place in the spring and summer, when groundwater occurs at the bottom of the cave.

As the winter approached, the mountain again received cold air, while warm air accumulated in the soil from the summer was gradually pushed out. Warm air escapes through ice, causing the ice to melt.
