For years, doctors have built detailed maps of the body and organs, blood circulation, digestive system, and nerve impulses, but the brain has always been a mystery. Now, the group of neuroscientists, computer experts and engineers claim that the US has completed the "most accurate map" of the human brain.

According to AFP, the authors used brain images of 210 volunteers from a project of the US National Institutes of Health. They looked at the entire cortex, combining various criteria to draw borders around the areas and then formed 210 detailed brain maps. Finally, the researchers synthesized, giving a map of "typical" brains .

The map shows that the number of areas per hemisphere has increased to 180 instead of 83 as before, including 97 areas that have never been discovered.

"These insights and tools help explain why the cortex affects health and disease," co-author Bruce Cuthbert from the US National Institutes of Health told Nature. He believed that someday, the map would allow people to "operate to an unprecedented level of precision".
