More than a month has passed since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 people and spilled hundreds of thousands of tons of oil onto the sea surface. In the following weeks, US officials and organizations took all measures to prevent the spread of oil and minimize environmental damage.

But until now all efforts have not yielded significant results. Last weekend, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal announced he would order a barricade of sand to prevent oil from reaching the state's coast.

It was discovered that many sharks and dolphins washed ashore. Crabs, turtles and birds grapple in polluted water as oil spreads to the swamps of Louisiana. A beach in southern New Orleans must be shut down because of oil. The US Coast Guard said the huge oil spill stretched over an area up to 240 km long.
