The 'sea monster' market has 300 teeth
A Portuguese fishing boat conducted research near the coast and caught a 'sea monster' more than 600m underwater.
The creature has a "long slender body and a head resembling a snake".
The fish body is about 1.5m long, slender, at first glance, it resembles a snake. But the fishermen were horrified when looking at its mouth with more than 300 teeth. After identification, experts said this fish is a Frilled Shark belonging to a rare species of "Frilled shark".
As National Geographic reports, the rimmed shark is known as a "living fossil". They have existed on earth for 80 million years.
Scaly sharks have been swimming in the depths of the oceans since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Their huge jaws and more than 300 teeth are used to catch squid and other fish very efficiently.
This is one of the very few ancient animals that still exist in modern times.
A shark with flexible teeth that can chew and swallow prey whole.
Frilled sharks are mainly found in the deep parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Earlier in 2007, Japanese fishermen caught a live frill shark off the coast and transferred it to Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka Prefecture, but the frill shark died soon after.
