Toshiba is about to release HD DVD 3-layer 51GB disc
The DVD Forum last August officially launched the green light to allow Toshiba to continue developing the standard three-layer HD DVD disc format.
Technology news site DVDTown yesterday (September 11) reported that they now have enough information to confirm the technology of 3-layer DVD discs with storage capacity of up to 51GB ready to be put into production.
Toshiba representatives have not commented on the above information.
At the world's largest consumer electronics show, CES, held in January, Toshiba representative presented the HD DVD 51GB disc model to some visitors.
Toshiba's technology integrates three layers of HD DVD disc data on a single disc surface without using both sides of the disc. The disc layers are stacked on top of each other, each with a separate reflective frequency, which makes the disc reader easily accessible to pull the data to the disk surface without causing confusion.
But the most concerned issue today is whether current HD DVD device products are compatible with Toshiba's new optical disc format standard. At CES, when asked about this issue, a senior Toshiba official said he did not dare to ensure compatibility.
Meanwhile, more than a year ago when Toshiba unveiled this new HD DVD disc technology, it confirmed that there will be some existing HD DVD players on the market compatible with the new disc standard.
