Baldness has long been a worry for many, especially in men. In an effort to find a way to treat the disease, US scientists have recently adopted hair follicle cells in the laboratory, thanks to the application of 3D printing technology. This has given hope to those who need hair transplants.

Plastic molds consist of deep holes of only half a millimeter in diameter created by 3D printing technology.

The research team at the University of Colombia applied 3D printing technology to create a plastic mold of deep holes of only half a millimeter in diameter, designed to simulate the natural microenvironment of human hair cells.

After the human skin is arranged to grow around the mold, the hair follicle cells are sown and covered with Keratin-producing cells. Later, the team poured a mixture of growth factors that stimulated hair growth. This mixture contains JAK inhibitors , which are able to awaken the resting hair follicles, when used on the skin.

The research team used a combination of growth factors to stimulate hair growth.

Earlier, the researchers found a route called JAK-STAT in the stem cells of a resting hair follicle to maintain a dormant state. Through control of route activity, JAK inhibitors can activate hair follicle growth.

After about 3 weeks, the hair follicle will form and begin to produce hair. According to the team, the new method helps create an array of precisely molded hair designs that are suitable for transplanting into a patient's scalp.

In addition, the way to develop hair follicles in this form also allows for unlimited hair transplants, a limited remedy of a common method of hair transplantation today is to use hair in other areas on the scalp.
