AFP reported that the Maruyama Zoo staff in Sapporo City knocked taiko drums near the living area of two Chinese crocodiles Susu and Yoyo. They hope that the low sound created by taiko drums will stimulate mating crocodiles, because the sound of drums is similar to the sound that crocodiles emit when they do 'it'.

'After enjoying our drum screen, the Susu female crocodile called a few times, but the male Yoyo did not seem to care. We believe that drumming is an effective measure. That measure will continue to be applied , 'said Hideaki Yamamoto, a zoo employee.

Maruyama Zoo has helped Chinese crocodiles successfully mate by knocking on glasses in 2001, 2008 and 2009. But this measure no longer works after they are transferred to the new barn.

'Because the new barn is covered with thicker glass, the sound it emits is not the same as the sound from the glass panel in the old barn. It is also possible that the crocodiles feel stressed after moving to the new barn, so the male does not want to mate , 'Yamamoto said.

The breeding season of Chinese crocodiles lasts from January to March every year.
