The phenomenon of ice melting in the Arctic could cause global sea levels to rise by up to 1.6 meters this century, threatening many of Vietnam's delta and coastal cities, scientists warn.

Scientists participating in the Arctic Monitoring and Evaluation (AMAP) project in Oslo, Norway claim that 40% of the water the oceans receive annually is derived from ice and snow melt , AFP believe.

The latest AMAP report shows that the Arctic temperature is growing twice as fast as the global average and the last 6 years are the hottest period that people have ever recorded in the Arctic. The Arctic temperature in the summer of those six years is much higher than it was a few decades ago. In just three or four decades, the Arctic Ocean could become an ice-free ocean in the summer.

This situation makes the water levels in the oceans rise faster than any previous forecast. " Global sea levels could rise from 0.9 to 1.6 m between now and 2100. The melting of Arctic glaciers and ice blocks on Greenland will be an important factor. for sea level rise , " AMAP said.

If global sea levels only rise by 0.9 m, low coastal and coastal cities in Vietnam, Bangladesh, China and many other countries will suffer bad consequences, the AMAP warns.

When the sea level rises, many small island nations will be submerged, countless farmland will be salty and cannot be used. The scale and power of big storms and other intense weather phenomena also increase with sea level.

In early 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) once stated that the water levels of the oceans could increase by 18 to 59 cm in the last year of this century. However, the IPCC did not take into account the impact of melting ice, especially from Greenland. If the island's ice is completely melted, the global sea level will rise by at least 5 meters.
