What if cats were the same size as tigers?

Cats are widely distributed animals, with many species and numbers. China alone has more than 40 million cats .

At present, scientists have studied the relationship of cats with humans as well as their behavior and ecological status.

Cats play an important role in human life, besides being pets, they are also mouse-catching experts. But in reality, we still cannot call cats completely "domesticated" animals. So what would happen if an individual cat could reach the size of a tiger?

Cats were never fully domesticated by humans?

In fact, the domestic cat is a semi-domesticated animal and was one of the first animals that humans began to domesticate. As early as 8000 BC, humans began to domesticate cats. However, scientists believe that the extent to which humans domesticated cats was relatively small compared to other domesticated animals.

The traditional way of domesticating cats is through selective breeding, humans make cats more adaptable to human lifestyles. However, modern cats are not yet fully domesticated and they still retain some characteristics of wild cats.

For example, domestic cats can survive in the wild and reproduce independently without humans. In contrast, dogs have been domesticated over tens of thousands of years, live an anthropocentric life, and are unlikely to survive in the wild without humans.

So we can say that cats have been partially domesticated . The relationship between cats and humans is one of mutual cooperation rather than complete domination. Cats can help humans catch mice, protect crops, and humans also feed them leftovers.

In contrast, dogs are so completely domesticated that they are like members of the human family, domestic dogs must rely on human support to survive.

There are a large number of cats in China, according to statistics, there are more than 240 million households raising cats in this country, with a total of more than 40 million cats. With the rapid development of the pet economy, the number of cats has begun to increase globally.

Nowadays, many families keep cats as family members and they spend a lot of money on buying food, toys and medicine for cats. Even stray cats become pets on the street, many people like to take care of and feed stray cats, on the contrary, stray dogs are rarely liked by passersby.

What if cats were the size of foxes?

Assuming that individual cats are the same size as tigers, cats have the potential to have different impacts on the environment and on humans. Both cats and tigers are felids and they have many similarities in appearance and behavior. However, due to the difference in body size, their roles in the ecological environment are completely different. Tigers are apex predators in the food chain and their position in the ecosystem is very high.

Tigers usually need a large amount of food to survive, so they need to control larger territories to find food. Compared to this, cats are smaller and do not need a lot of food, so they usually only need a small territory to live.

If we put cats and tigers today in the same ecological environment, cats would have less impact on the environment.  Since cats need less food, water and other resources than tigers, cats do not interfere with the survival of other animals.

However, if there are many cats living in one place, they can take up a lot of space, leading to loss of habitat for other wildlife.

Cats and tigers also behave differently . Tigers are generally solitary animals, they usually stay alone and rarely travel with other animals. Cats, on the other hand, can form small societies and they usually live with other cats. This means that if a cat gets too large, its social structure and behavior can change.

If the cat is as large as a tiger, it may become more aggressive because it thinks it is stronger. Cats may start fighting and competing for territory, which can lead to more cat-on-cat conflict. When cats reach the size of tigers, the relationship between humans and captive big cats is no longer the same as the relationship we have with our pets.

At the same time, breeding cats can also become more difficult, as they require more food and space to survive. In the worst case, you could be seriously injured or accidentally killed, as cats the size of tigers can be very destructive. Even a 4kg house cat can hurt you if they become upset.

When you consider the size and strength of a big cat compared to a human, we can see that these animals could kill us with ease.

A sudden movement or loud noise will likely cause them to react, as they too feel scared, which can trigger their wild instincts towards you.

In the presence of such a dangerous animal, even experienced people who have good relationships with them can be injured by them.
