Cesária Évora (August 27, 1941 - December 17, 2011) is a famous Cabo Verde singer. She got everyone called with the "barefoot diva" nickname because when she performed she didn't wear shoes. She is one of the most famous singers in the world of morna music. (Morna is Cape Verde's popular music. This is a very complex, deeply sad music that has many influences from traditional tunes).

At 10 years old, Evora had to go to an orphanage because her mother could not earn enough money to support her children. She earned herself a job as a seamstress at the age of 16. A few years later, when Cesaria's voice was discovered, a friend persuaded her to sing in a pub, where the sailors frequented.
In the 1960s, she began singing on ships carrying Portuguese tourists parked in Mindelo as well as on local radio. It wasn't until 1985 at the invitation of her new Cabo Verde Bana singer to perform in Portugal. By 1988, over three decades of singing in bars, she was famous in the world after a young French man invited her to France to record the album La Diva Aux Pieds Nus.
