11 people died from landslides in Indonesia

Officials say at least 11 people were killed by two landslides on Sumatra island in western Indonesia today.

Mud, buried in 15 houses in Nagari village Sungai Batang in Agam district, West Sumatra province in the first landslide killed 7 people. Several hundred people were evacuated because people feared that the land would continue to fall, AFP reported.

Then heavy rains in Jambi province, next to West Sumatra province, caused the land to collapse at a drilling site owned by a state-owned energy company. The company announced a disaster that left four workers dead, one missing and five injured.

According to officials, 19 people were missing in two landslides.

Flash floods and landslides are frequent occurrences in Indonesia during the rainy season. Many Indonesians live in mountainous and low-lying areas - where flash floods and landslides can attack.

Two landslides occurred after heavy rains caused heavy flooding in Jakarta city 10 days ago causing 32 deaths and about 46,000 evacuees.
