A wake up volcano in Indonesia

Dust and gas erupt from one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes today, making people in the surrounding villages worry, but the government has not issued an evacuation order.

Farid Binatold, an Indonesian volcanic expert, told AFP that Lokon volcano on Sulawesi erupted for the first time at 3:07 am local time this time. After a few minutes it erupted twice more.

'People about 5km from the volcano can hear the sound coming from it. So they were bewildered. The winds blow dust to villages 5km away from the volcano in the east and northeast. Dust has flown to two villages with a population of about 10,000 people , 'Binatold said.

More than 5,200 people evacuated when the Lokon volcano, with a height of 1,580m, erupted in July, causing a column of dust up to 3,500m to form above the summit. In 1991, a Swiss tourist died when he approached Lokon volcano just in time.

The Indonesian archipelago is located between the Pacific Ring of Fire - the area with many geological fault lines surrounding the Pacific basin. Most earthquakes and volcanoes in the world occur in this belt. Several dozen active volcanoes are located on the Indonesian archipelago. The most active volcano, called Merapi and located on Java Island, killed 350 people during last year's eruptions.
