Announcing the discovery of some new insects in Vietnam

On May 27, researcher Pham Hong Thai at the Vietnam Museum of Nature of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said entomologists from the Vietnam Museum of Nature and Japanese high school entrants. A collaboration with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences has announced the discovery of some new insects in Vietnam.

The newly announced insect species is a new species of beetle scientifically named Rhyparus vietnamicus Ochi, Kusui, Pham, 2018; 2 new species of cicada belongs to genus Sogana, Tropiduchidae, subspecies Auchenorrhyncha and Hemiptera.

Specifically, Japanese entomologists and entomologists of the Vietnam Museum of Nature announced Rhyparus Vietnamicus Ochi, Kusui, Pham, 2018.

The new beetle belongs to Rhyparus, Rhyparini, Aphodiinae, Scarabaeidae, Coleoptera.

The specimen of this species was collected in Lao Cai province with body size: 7.7-7.9mm. With the release of Rhyparus vietnamicus Ochi, Kusui, Pham, 2018, so far the number of Rhyparus species recorded to be distributed in Vietnam is 2 species.

Also during this time, scientists from the Royal Belgian Academy of Natural Sciences and the Vietnam Museum of Nature announced two new cicada species of the genus Sogana, the Tropiduchidae family, the subspecies Auchenorrhyncha and the Hemiptera.

These species were named Sogana bachmana Constant & Pham, 2019 with a male body of 29.0 mm long and Sogana baviana Constant & Pham, 2019 with a male body of 23.5 mm long.

In the world, there are 660 species belonging to the Tropiduchidae family, and in Vietnam, 18 species belong to this family. Sogana has been recorded with 11 species in the world, of which 3 species were recorded in Vietnam.

With 2 new species being published in Vietnam, the number of Tropiduchidae families in Vietnam is 20. Among 13 species of Sogana genus, there are 5 species distributed in Vietnam (accounting for 40% of species).

However, these figures represent only part of the true diversity of the Tropiduchidae family in Vietnam, where many new species and new varieties are awaiting publication.
