30 reports on molecular biology applications in medicine presented at the conference focused on topics such as: Genetic diagnosis by molecular biology using saliva specimens and automated methods; detect and identify fungi in ENT specimens by PCR testing and direct sequencing; studying the role of basal membranes in liver regeneration from stem cells; diagnose hepatitis B by molecular biology technique.

Dr. Pham Hung Van, Deputy Director of Biomedical Laboratory of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said: The need for diagnosis requires the use of sequencing technology to be very large. Sequence solution is a useful tool, an open system for diagnosing genetic mutations for cancer research or diagnosis of drug-resistant viruses.

This technology helps the detection of prenatal genetic diseases for the fetus, early detection of cancer, detection and direct identification of microbiological agents in specimens without the need for culture.

Sequencing is an open system, so it is feasible to apply in low-income countries because the price is not too high. In Vietnam, there are many research centers and universities with sequencing machines and it is possible to develop this technology to serve the diagnosis in medicine.
