With light and easy to transport properties, plastic-based artificial blood does not need to be cooled and can be stored for a long time. The team confirmed that this type of blood can serve effectively at the accident site or on the battlefield because it allows rapid blood transfusions before transferring the victim to the hospital.

According to Dr. Lance Twyman, of the Department of Chemistry at Sheffield University and chair of the research team, plastic artificial blood consists of plastic molecules containing an iron atom in their nucleus and like red blood cells, they can transporting oxygen to all parts of the body. This artificial blood has low production costs.

The team said it will conduct further biological tests for artificial blood from plastic before it is put into use.
