ASEAN contributes to the anti-dust fund
The anti-dust program in ASEAN has taken a new step when the environmental minister of ten member states unanimously established a fund to prevent dust and smoke. The three countries Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia pledged to contribute USD 50,000 each to this fund.
Brunei and Thailand also said they would contribute. Funds will be used to prevent forest fires in Indonesia and solve the dust and smoke caused by forest fires. The contribution is based on a voluntary spirit, other member countries will contribute depending on ability and level of need. So observers believe that the amount of funds raised will be hard to reach $ 60 million, which Indonesia needs to fight annual forest fires.
The anti-dust fund was established at the 10th ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Environment, taking place in Cebu (Philippines) on October 10 and 11. The ministers discussed many environmental issues and adopted the Cebu Resolution on Sustainable Development, which stated the commitment to promote environmental cooperation in ASEAN.
