Vesta - one of the largest asteroids in the solar system with a diameter of nearly 530 km - has many characteristics similar to rocky planets like Earth, discovered by a recent study.

Based on the data collected by the exploration ship Dawn (launched in July 2011), the scientists recorded many unusual features of Vesta. For example, on the surface there are many funnel-shaped mouths due to impact, grooves, hollow holes and many minerals .

"There is a lot of geological evidence that it looks like Earth and the Moon," said Christopher T Russell, a scientist.

However, he said it could not be classified into the 'planetary' group. According to the BBC, scientists are describing it as a "transitional" object .

Vesta was found in 1807, sometimes seen with the naked eye.

According to scientists, on Vesta there is volcanic activity and evidence of this is that hundreds of Vesta's fragments have been found and are on display at museums around the world.
