Telegraph said that China is currently only inferior to the US in terms of the number of research published annually. However, China will surpass the world lead before 2020 if the current growth rate is maintained. The prediction comes after the BBC commented that China could surpass Japan to become the world's second largest economy.

Thomson Reuters has investigated the number of scientific research in many countries around the world at the request of the Financial Times. The results show that research by Chinese scientists has increased at a faster rate than 'rivals' like India, Russia and Brazil. Previously it was thought that India could threaten the US champion's position in scientific research, but Thomson Reuters found it far behind China.

Even Brazil is about to catch up with India in the number of published scientific works. Brazilian scientists proved to be outstanding in the field of agriculture and biology. Meanwhile, the rate of increase in the number of Russian scientific works tends to decrease since 1981.

"China is moving up to the first place in scientific research," said James Wilsdon, an expert at the Royal Society.

Jonathan Adams, director of Thomson Reuters' scientific research evaluation, uses the word 'incredible' to describe China's growth in scientific research. However, he admits that the quality of China's scientific discoveries is inadequate.

According to the Telegraph, the huge investments that the state offers to schools, universities and research programs have boosted the growth of scientific research projects. Chinese scientists seem to have an advantage in chemical and material engineering.
