Chinese scientists will measure the country's lowest point on the mainland, also the second lowest point in the world - Aydingkol lake, in Xinjiang Uyghur national autonomous region, northwest China.

The re-measurement scheme will be approved by the central government and kicked off next year, Liu Geqing, a senior official of the Autonomous Region's Land Survey and Survey Committee, said.

Located in the Turpan basin in East Xinjiang, Aydingkol saltwater lake is the lowest point in China and the second deepest lake in the world, just behind the Dead Sea. It is also dubbed China 's Dead Sea because of its height above sea level only slightly above the "champion" in West Asia.

The re-measurement work will help to find the exact depth of the lake. In 1978, the identified lake was 155 meters below sea level, although there were many documents that directed other figures.

Aydingkol Lake was born in the formation of the Himalayas about 200 million years ago. After the measurement in 1978, new features may have emerged due to geological changes, but not much, Liu said.
