Scientists have found that caffeine stimulates the growth of tiny follicles in the head shells of gentlemen who are showing signs of hair loss. The results could lead to a new treatment for more than half of the 50-year-old British men who are bald.

Research has found that caffeine works by preventing the harmful effects of chemicals that damage hair follicles. But drinking coffee is not the most effective way. Scientists estimate that it takes 60 cups a day to affect hair follicles.

Instead, German cosmetics company Alpecin developed a caffeine-rich solution to apply to the head.

"Caffeine is a well-known substance but not everyone knows its effects on human hair," said Tobias Fischer, who conducted the study at Jena University in Germany. "This study has shown an interesting potential for coffee to stimulate hair growth."
