Bill Gates' Gates Foundation supported a Massachusetts biotechnology company to create a more modern generation of implantable contraceptive devices. The company is called MicroCHIPS Inc. is building an implantable birth control rod and can control the pump slowly. The device, theoretically, can operate for 16 years to replace.

MicroCHIPS has tested "smart drug delivery systems" with osteoporosis patients, to prevent them from having to inject many times a day. MIT's Bill and Melinda Gates and Robert Langer believe this technology could solve the population crisis in poor countries around the world.

A cavity containing levonogestrel , a contraceptive hormone, will be integrated inside the device 1.5cm long, and users can activate or disable it according to their needs with a number of wireless devices. Currently the device is in the testing phase, the team hopes to resolve the security issue soon, to prevent anyone other than users from controlling the system, before submitting it to the FDA, Administration US Food and Drug Administration, approved in the near future.
