Discovered 1,800-year-old horse brooches

Rare specimens dating back to ancient Rome were found by amateur archaeologists in a field in Lincolnshire county.

Jason Price, a veteran of the armed forces, took part in excavations near the village of Leasingham, eastern England, when he found a rare horse-shaped brooch . The specimen is made of copper alloy, 5 cm long and weighs 23.18 g. It was created when the Romans ruled England between 200 and 410, according to the Lincolnshire County Council.

"The brooch was buried in mud, about 20 cm from the ground. At first, I thought it was just a piece of trash but when I cleaned it, my mouth dropped open in amazement. It was a horse-shaped brooch. " Price recounted. "I have found things like ancient coins before, but this discovery is unique. It's wonderful!".

Dr. Lisa Brundle from Lincolnshire County Council emphasized Price's findings as "extremely rare". It depicts quite practically a horse with incredible levels of detail. Even though the specimen was 1,800 years old, it was preserved almost intact, in which the pin still worked.

• "This type of brooch might be used on someone's cloak. It's very rare in the UK for being the second one ever found," Brundle said. The specimen is now on display at the Collection Museum in Lincoln.
