Archaeologists have discovered many underground tombs containing countless treasures, including a box

Archaeologists have discovered many underground tombs containing countless treasures, including a "demon eye" box, at a 2,000-year-old graveyard near the Nile in Sudan.

In the newly discovered underground tomb system, experts from the Abidiya archaeological project, conducted by the Sudan National Antiquities and Museum (NCAM) in collaboration with the British Museum, found many items. Precious artifacts, such as a silver ring with an image of a god and a porcelain box decorated with large eyes, are believed to counter the demon eye.

Local residents unknowingly discovered the ancient Meroitic cemetery in 2002 while digging through a ditch near Dangeil village, on the banks of the Nile. Archaeological excavations have been promoted since then.

The cemetery is defined as dating to the prosperity of the Kush kingdom in Sudan. Based on the ancient city of Meroe, located south of Dangeil village today, the Kush kingdom controlled a vast territory, with the northern border stretching to Egypt under Roman control. . Sometimes, this kingdom is under the control of a queen.

Although the Kush people built hundreds of pyramids, the graveyard near the Nile does not contain any structure on the ground. All tombs are underground.

The archaeological team also found countless items in the tombs, including many large jars used to store sorghum beer or food containers.

Mahmoud Suliman Bashir, an excavation team member admitted, until now, they still do not know the exact size of the graveyard.

In the new book, co-wrote with a British Museum expert on the Meroitic excavation in Dangeil, Sudan, Bashir added: " The Kush burial tradition shows popular belief in life. That's why goods and food are often buried with corpses. These items are needed for every individual in the next life. "
