The Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences said on December 6 that its researchers had just discovered a new plant species belonging to the Gesneriaceae family in Yunnan province, southwest of the country.

Accordingly, scientists at the Institute of Spices and Beverages, under the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, found the new plant species while researching plant sources for spices.

It was first discovered in 2022 in Kim Binh district, near the border with Vietnam.

Comparing with some known plant species, researchers confirmed that this is a new plant species with unique characteristics such as its flowers growing in dense clusters.

The new plant species was named Stauranthera floribunda , which means many flowers.

As Stauranthera floribunda is facing extinction in the wild, researchers have proposed adding the new plant species to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
