In the past, researchers had caught some specimens in the net, but had not been able to see them living in the forest. The animal was identified last February when scientists are investigating a private conservation area in northern Peru's rainforest.

Investigators encountered the animal three times during the day and recorded its cries at night. This owl is so different that its name is named after both chi and Xenoglaux, meaning " strange owl ", thanks to the sparse fur around the red eyes.

The population of this species is estimated to be less than 1000, and probably only about 250. They live only in the remote jungle of Peru. Researchers say the species is threatened by fast deforestation rates and narrow habitat ranges.
