Telegraph said Professor Guosong Liu of Tsinghua University, China and colleagues studied the effects of magnesium-rich vegetables on mouse brain activity. They developed a compound capable of increasing magnesium levels in a group of mice of different ages. Then the expert team monitored changes in their behavior.
"We found that mice learn faster and remember longer when their magnesium levels increase," Professor Liu said.
After examining changes at the molecular level in the brain, the team found synapses and the rate of information exchange in the brain increased.
In the article in the journal Neuron, the team thinks that increasing the amount of food containing magnesium is a way to improve brain activity and reduce the effects of aging.
Half the population of industrialized countries do not have enough magnesium in their bodies. Magnesium deficiency increases with age. This situation leads to a decline in memory capacity.
Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg and an atomic number equal to 12 in the periodic table. It is a relatively hard, silvery-white metal (only two-thirds the mass of aluminum if the same volume) and tarnish when left in the air. Foods rich in magnesium are quite rich - like fish, beans, almonds, potatoes, dairy products.
