Can Gio mangrove forest is the best restored, cared and protected forest in Vietnam and the world.
About 40km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve ( Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City) has a unique diversity of flora and fauna typical of the mangrove area.
Formed in the downstream of Dong Nai river system - Saigon River, the total area of this biosphere reserve is 75,740 ha, of which the core zone is 4,721 ha, the buffer zone is 41,139 ha, and the transitional area is 29,880 ha.
Can Gio mangrove forest has very special environmental conditions, an intermediate ecosystem between aquatic ecosystems with terrestrial ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems and saltwater ecosystems.
The flora here is particularly rich with over 150 species of plants, becoming a source of food and shelter for many aquatic species, fish and other vertebrates.
The predominant species here are white cork, white Avicennia, paired mangrove populations - white cork, tiger, page, stand, etc., and brackish water such as cucumbers, tilapia, coconut leaves, ferns, etc .
Most of these plants possess large roots of roots floating on the water, creating a unique spectacle typical of mangrove forests.
Animal populations in Can Gio forest are no less abundant, among them are the long-tailed monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) and many birds and storks.
This is also an ideal place for scientific research, ecotourism.
This forest also has the role of "lungs", as well as "kidneys" that clean the air and waste water from industrial cities in the upstream of Dong Nai - Saigon River into the East Sea.
On January 21, 2000, Can Gio forest was recognized as the first biosphere reserve in Vietnam by MAB of UNESCO, the network of the world's biosphere reserves.
Having been devastated during the war, the restoration, development and protection of this forest recognized the great contribution of the youth force in Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio people.
